GIVE ‘TIL IT HURTS....I MEAN ‘TIL IT FILLS GOOD

(2 CORINTHIANS 9:6-14 and selected verses)

SUBJECT: BEING A CHEERFUL GIVER

INTRO:

1. Old Testament law was to give 10%, and if you added up all the laws that were in response

to giving you could get well over 10%.

2. Many preachers today still hold to that ten percent figure as the law.

3. Many preachers today preach that we are to give all we have, to the point that many people

are becoming bankrupt.

4. The Bible says we are to give what we can give while remaining to be "Cheerful Givers."

INTERROGATIVE: WHAT SHOULD A CHRISTIAN GIVE?

I. OLD TESTAMENT SAYS WE ARE TO GIVE TEN PERCENT

A. LEVITICUS 27:30 "A tithe of everything from the land, whether grain from the soil or fruit from the trees, belongs to the LORD; it is holy to the LORD."

1. A tithe of everything

2. It belongs to the Lord

B. NUMBERS 18:21 "I give to the Levites all the tithes in Israel as their inheritance in return for the work they do while serving at the Tent of Meeting."

1. The tithe was then given BY God to the Levites for their services in the temple

C. MALACHI 3:10 " Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this," says the LORD Almighty, "and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that you will not have room enough for it."

1. Their faithfulness in tithing would be rewarded

TRANSITION: That was all under the Old Covenant. With the death and Resurrection of

Christ a "New Covenant" began. Hebrews 8:13 says, "By calling this covenant "new," he has made the first one obsolete; and what is obsolete and aging will soon disappear. How are we to give under the "New Covenant?"

II. WE ARE TO BE CHEERFUL GIVERS

A. 2 CORINTHIANS 9:7 "..... Each man should give what he has decided in his heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver."

1. What he has decided in his HEART

a. The Word of God in a man’s heart guides his giving

2. Not Reluctantly

a. He WANTS to give

3. Not UNDER COMPULSION

a. no longer UNDER LAW but now giving by FAITH

TRANSITION: WHAT ARE THE RESULTS OF CHEERFUL GIVING?

III. WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF CHEERFUL GIVING

A. 2 CORINTHIANS 9:6 "...........whoever sows generously will also reap generously"

1. The poor person who gives only a dollar or a few pennies has given from the heart

B. 2 CORINTHIANS 9:8 " And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work."

TRANSITION: OUR GIVING IS NOT LIMITED TO MONEY

IV. WE ARE TO NOT ONLY GIVE OF OUR FINANCES BUT OF OUR TALENTS

A. 2 CORINTHIANS 9:13 Because of the SERVICE by which you have proved yourselves, men will praise God for the obedience that accompanies your confession of the gospel of Christ, and for your generosity in sharing with them and with everyone else.

1. It is said that in most churches 80% of the work is done by 20% of the people.

a. 2 CORINTHIANS 9:12 FROM THE MESSAGES, "Carrying out this social relief work involves far more than helping meet the bare needs of poor Christians."

b. 1 CORINTHIANS 12:5 (NIV) There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord.

CONCLUSION:

1. Under the Old Covenant requirements of 10% were to be given

2. Under the New Covenant we are not required to give any set amount, but

to give cheerfully what we can give.

3. Financial support is not all that we can give, we can give of our individual talents.
